Painting from Observation

This course will explore the fundamental techniques of painting from direct perception. Emphasis will be on understanding the properties and attributes of oil paint, strengthening observation skills, composition, color relationships, and creating accurate representations of light on objects.
Class critiques included. Open to beginning and intermediate painters.
Plein Aire Watercolor Group
Led by Elaine Daly

These plein aire sessions will include Marblehead scenes and the instructor will guide you through the process of simplifying a scene from the beginning drawing to the finished product. This is a one application watercolor class for all levels.
Exploring with Acrylics

This class will cover the basics of capturing shapes, light and shadows in acrylics. An understanding of composition, design and mixing color will help each student build a resource folder to begin a painting starting with a still life. This is a perfect foundational class for exploring with acrylics.
Mixed Media created in “Series”

Create a cohesive ‘series’ of visually rich and dynamic images! Using a technique developed by artist Leslie Fahn Rosenberg, students will interpret and recreate a painting by “The Masters” by layering acrylic paint, pastel, decoupage and line drawings. Working from one image as inspiration for the 4 weeks, the focus will be on the creative process with a different mixed-media piece created each week. “Masterpieces” will be provided.

Through free-hand drawing, this course uncovers the beauty in drawing from ordinary objects and natural forms. Participants will develop an understanding of contour, gesture, form, surface texture, composition and spatial development through a variety of media. Advanced Drawing from Life

This course will share many drawing techniques used by Renaissance draughtsmen for studying the nude. Titian, Raphael, Rubens, Sargent, and Da Vinci all drew the figure in natural light and concluded that through this process one actually learns how to draw. Students, with direct supervision of the instructor, will work with a live, nude model in natural-light setting. Proportions, values, quality of line, drawing technique, design, and composition will all be covered.
Drop-In Life Drawing

For an opportunity to exercise and refine your art skills by drawing from a nude model this is the perfect drop-in class for you. If working with paints, please bring your own drop cloth. A limited number of easels are available.
Jewelry Making 101

Learn how to make an entire wardrobe of accessories in this four session class. We will cover bead stringing techniques and basic wire work. Students will complete 6 finished pieces including a strung necklace, beaded two strand bracelet, a pendant and multiple styles of earrings. While this is an introductory course, more experienced students are welcome to expand upon prior skills, or to undertake a special project with supervision.
Wire Work Jewelry

This is a beginner to intermediate class which will cover fundamentals of wire work jewelry including wire wrapping, linking, coiling, binding, caging and basic wire crochet. Students will work in copper and sterling, and make at least 6 finished pieces which include a wire crochet cuff bracelet, sea glass pendant and chandelier and funky coiled earrings.
Workshops
Watercolor Workshop with Frank Costantino

By special arrangement with the MAA, this comprehensive workshop will familiarize participants with color palettes, effective blending of colors, use of brushes, and responsiveness of the medium on different papers. Various wash methods — wet-on-wet, dry-brush, glazing, blending, sharp and soft edges, dilution control, among others will be explored. Using still life subjects & from the instructors demos, participants will learn ways to simplify a composition, while covering the dynamic elements of light, contrast, values, movement, textures, etc., which make paintings come alive.

Wish you had a website so you could easily showcase your artwork for galleries, exhibitors, and clients? Come to this hands-on workshop and leave the same day with a fully-functioning web site, including a portfolio of your artwork! Creating a website is inexpensive, easy and fun, and you will be able to maintain it yourself going forward. No technical or web skills needed. Please bring a laptop loaded with photos of your artwork (or on a CD).

Make everyone on your holiday list a unique beaded or wire gift for a fraction of store costs. Using basic jewelry and wire work skills, we will make bead and charm bookmarks, snowflake ornaments, key chains, zipper pulls, wine charms and napkin rings. Students will leave with 6 finished gifts. Additional materials may be purchased after class for take home projects.
“Inside The Box”

Held in conjunction with the artist’s “Inside & Outside the Box” Nov. exhibit at the MAA in this special workshop,. Sandra will guide you through the process of using your memorabilia, pictures and other items of interest to make a wonderful ‘momento’ for your home or as a gift. You can also invent a shadowbox on any subject you would like to commemorate. Wonderfully exotic papers, collage pages, ribbons and other fun items will be provided for you to add to your creation.
Demonstrations
Mark Shasha – Capturing Natural Light in Landscape Painting
Oil Painting Demonstration

In this approximately one-hour demonstration, Mark will use a combination of time-honored methods as well as his own techniques to set up the basic steps of painting outdoors. He will start with preparing the canvas, composing the scene and finding the values which make landscape paintings come to life.
Jeff Weaver: Getting Started Oil Painting Demonstration

When beginning a new painting, are you ever at a loss for where to begin? Questions of subjects and colors, for instance, can easily disrupt the creative process. In this demonstration, marine artist Jeff Weaver will explain some of his techniques for getting started with new work. Weaver is a returning guest to the MAA, and works out of his studio on the Gloucester harbor.

Snowflake Ornament Workshop

Please join us for a fun-filled weekend of crafts as Dawn LiVigne of EOS Design’s hosts our Snowflake Ornament Workshop. Crafters of all ages are invited to make beautiful Czech glass snowflake ornaments in the ballroom of the MAA. While simple to construct, these ornaments make spectacular window and tree decorations as well as lovely inexpensive gifts. Instruction is free with a materials fee of $5.00 per ornament.
On The Road
Currier Museum

Ever wanted to learn what goes on behind the scene at a museum? We will be visiting “The Secret Life of Art: Mysteries of the Museum Revealed” an exhibit throughout the Currier Museum about object histories, artistic techniques, conservation, and museum practices that are not regularly conveyed through traditional art history and gallery installations.
We will also be taking the “Zimmerman House Tour” which provides visitors with a 90-minute tour of the house with information about life in the 1950s and 60s, and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Included is transportation, museum and house tour admission.
New England Quilt Museum

Join us for a docent-led tour of: “African-American Quilts Today: A Celebration of Motherhood, Sisterhood, and the Matriarchs,” a groundbreaking thematic exhibit by some of the most renowned African-American fiber artists working today.
We will also visit the National Park Service Visitor Center where we will learn about Lowell’s textile industry. Lunch has been planned at Cobblestones, but is not included in the cost of the trip. Included is transportation, museum admission and exhibit tour.

MAA Class Policies
Tuition Payment: You may register in person, by mail or by phone. Please give your name, address, phone and email address. Tuition must be paid when you register. We accept cash, check, Visa and MasterCard.
Cancellation Policies: A refund, minus a $20 processing fee will be issued if we are notified at least one week prior to the start of your class. Once classes begin your tuition can not be refunded. Generally our classes are held with a minimum of 4 students. Decisions on whether a MAA class or workshop meets minimum student enrollment will be made at least 48 hours before the beginning of the class/workshop. Occasionally a class will be postponed. The office will contact students to inform them of the class status should a class/workshop need to be cancelled. In the case of the MAA cancelling a class, your tuition will be fully reimbursed, or your account will be credited.
Confirmations: We do not send written confirmations but we will notify you if there are any problems with your registration or changes that you should know about.
