What better way to beat the winter doldrums than to explore your creativity! Take a class, drop in to life drawing or attend a workshop this winter at the Marblehead Arts Association. Our classes and workshops are for beginners and those wanting to further their artist skills provided in a supportive and fun environment!

Fine Art
Mixed Media
Instructor: Leslie Rosenberg
Dates: Feb. 28, March 6, 13, 20, 27 · Time: 10am–12:30pm

Create a cohesive ‘series’ of visually rich and dynamic images! Using a technique developed by artist Leslie Fahn Rosenberg, students will interpret and recreate a painting by “The Masters” by layering acrylic paint, pastel, decoupage and line drawings. A series (or cohesive collection) of artwork will be created during the course, and by selecting one image as your inspiration for the 5 weeks, the focus will be on the creative process ‘without the hassle’ of trying to come up with a new idea each week! “Inspiration/Masterpieces” will be provided.
Winter Color Buffet

Stir up your creative juices and have fun while learning about basic composition, elements of design, value and color. A variety of subjects will be provided to paint from, including still lifes and portraits. Individual guidance and critiques at the end of each class.

Splatter and Splash
Instructor: Elaine Daly
Dates: Thursday, March 29 April 5, 12, 19, 26 · Time: 1:30–4pm

Learn how to use and play with this wonderful transparent medium of watercolor! Have fun discovering wet-on-wet and laying techniques. Use negative spaces and experiment with special effects using salt, saran wrap, rubbing alcohol and sea sponges. Individual guidance. Materials list provided.
Drop-In Life Drawing
Ongoing Wednesdays, 9am to noon

Exercise and refine your art skills the classic way - by drawing from a nude model. We’re open to all, regardless of one’s level of experience. Bring your medium of choice and a drop cloth, if working with paints. A limited number of easels are available.

Jewelry 101
Instructor: Dawn LiVigne

Learn how to make an entire wardrobe of accessories. In this four-week class, we will cover basic jewelry making skills including bead stringing, knotting and elementary wire work. Students will complete a minimum of six pieces, including a beaded bracelet, knotted necklace, wire-wrapped pendant, wire-linked anklet and earrings in various styles.
Wire Work 1

This class covers fundamentals of wire work jewelry including wire wrapping, linking, and coiling. Students will work in copper and sterling and complete at least 7 pieces including a spiral coil necklace, caged and spiral wrapped earrings.

Builds upon skills learned in Wire Works Jewelry 1, with at least 5 more challenging projects.
Workshops
Watercolor Workshop
Instructor: Frank Costantino, N.E.W.S.
Dates: March 31, April 1 · Time: 9:30–5:30

By special arrangement with the Marblehead Art Association (MAA), this intensive, comprehensive workshop will better familiarize participants with color palettes, the effective blending of colors, use of brushes, and responsiveness of the medium on different papers. A range of exercises will allow participants to explore and apply various wash methods — wet-on-wet, dry-brush, glazing, blending, sharp and soft edges, dilution control, among others. Each session will address some of the many aspects of color theory. Using still life subjects & from the instructors’ demos, participants will learn ways to simplify a composition, while learning to see and achieve the dynamic elements of light, contrast, values, movement, textures, which make paintings come alive. Experimentation and interpretative methods will also be demonstrated, discussed and encouraged during the workshop. The workshop will comprise two studio sessions, for about 8 hours each day, with a 45–60 minute lunch break.

Oil Painting Workshop – Painting from Observation
Instructor: Claudia Kaufman

Explore the fundamentals of oil painting from direct observation and begin learning to paint what you see. This 2-day workshop, open to beginners or intermediate painters will work from still life set-ups. Emphasis will be on creating interesting compositions, exploring color relationships, capturing light on objects and having fun! Instruction will be one-on-one with class critiques each day.

Pastel Workshop: “Meditative Spaces”
Instructor: Andrew Anderson Bell
Date: April 7 · Time: 10am–4pm ·
Members: $125 | Non-members: $150
This pastel workshop will focus on landscape painting, working in the studio from photographs, memory and imagination. Emphasis will be placed on composition, values and light. I will share how I use tools, materials, different types of papers and techniques when working with pastels. Students will receive individual attention, demonstrations and constructive critiques. This workshop is for adult students of all levels of pastel painting experience. Upon registration students can contact the instructor (9778-356-9556) to discuss materials or where to purchase them. If they can’t find certain items he will try to supply them for resale if given enough advance notice.

Instructor Bios
Fine Arts
Elaine Daly has been teaching for 25 years and is a graduate from Mass College of Art and has studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the DeCordova Museum and Montserrat College of Art. Elaine paints in watercolor and acrylic and creates sculptures in clay and stone. Her award-winning work can be found in galleries and private collections throughout the US, Europe and Japan.
Leslie Fahn Rosenberg is a Salem resident with a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Graphic Design/Illustration who has also studied at Carnegie Mellon, Philadelphia College of Art and Montserrat School of Art. As a Juried Artist and Photographer, she is a Member of the Marblehead Arts Association and sits on the Artist Advisory Board and Curatorial Board at LynnArts, Inc. She is an active participant in many arts organization and has had multiple exhibits in Marblehead, Lynn, Swampscott, Salem and as far north as Maine. Leslie is presently painting, drawing and sculpting full time in private studio in LynnArts; teaching; designing and installing exhibits for fellow artists.
Claudia Kaufman — A member of the Copley Society of Art, North Shore, Rockport and Marblehead Arts Associations, Claudia has been a frequent exhibitor and award winner in greater Boston area exhibits. She worked as a commercial artist in New York City and Boston followed by a career as marketing executive/ creative director of a national healthcare technology company. She has studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Mass College of Art and most recently completed a post baccalaureate residency program in painting at Brandeis University. Her studio practice is in Marblehead, MA.
MAA Class Policies
Tuition Payment: You may register in person, by mail or by phone. Please give your name, address, phone and email address. Tuition must be paid when you register. We accept cash, check, Visa and MasterCard.
Cancellation Policies: A refund, minus a $20 processing fee will be issued if we are notified at least one week prior to the start of your class. Once classes begin your tuition can not be refunded. Generally our classes are held with a minimum of 4 students. Decisions on whether a MAA class or workshop meets minimum student enrollment will be made at least 48 hours before the beginning of the class/workshop. Occasionally a class will be postponed. The office will contact students to inform them of the class status should a class/workshop need to be cancelled. In the case of the MAA canceling a class, your tuition will be fully reimbursed, or your account will be credited.
Confirmations: We do not send written confirmations but we will notify you if there are any problems with your registration or changes that you should know about.
