Amorn Phontang is a graduate of the Hotel Training Institute in Thailand and has worked for such notable establishments as The Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and the Disney Cruise Lines. He has been owner and chef of the local restaurant “Sticky Rice” for nearly six years.

“We are pleased to bring Amorn back to the Marblehead Art Association for this fun and enjoyable event,” states Nicholas Delegianis, Chair of the Programs and Education Committee. “This is an ideal event to do with your mother on Mother’s Day weekend or the perfect opportunity to create that fabulous centerpiece for her special dinner the next day.”

Dancing on Top of the Canvas — Art Demonstration with Olga Gernovski

Saturday, May 17th, 2pm

Olga Gernovski, 'Three Dancers'

Music being her muse, Olga Gernovski’s energy and rhythm emerges on the canvas in seemingly magical ways. It is as though her hands, armed with brushes or pallet knife, are dancing on top of the canvas as the painting appears. Gernovski will demonstrate her unique style she calls “Color Dance” on Saturday, May 17th starting at 2pm at the Marblehead Arts Association (MAA). Reservations can be made by calling the MAA, 781-631-2608, $10 for members, $12 for non/members.

Biography:
Gernovski is a member of the MAA and the Rockport Arts Association and her work has been shown internationally including the United States, Switzerland, Holland, Russia and her native Ukraine.

Olga Gernovski painting

In the Ukraine, Gernovski earned a B.S. in Architectural Design and worked as an architect and set designer with master theatrical designers. After emigrating to the U.S. twelve years ago, she began to study at the Art Institute of Boston. In a recent exhibit at MAA, Gernovski set a challenging goal; to create a series of paintings that unify a dynamic feeling of music and dance through unique color interpretation. To achieve this technique, Gernovski consulted with a classical dancer. The series “Color Dance” has been reviewed as a “Master of creation…in brilliant and mysterious textures.” Her exhibits have been well received in Marblehead, Newton and Boston and she has won “Best of Show” Awards in several festivals.

"Sticks and Stones, the Sculptural Landscape"

Landscape Lecture with Cate Oranchak of World Renowned Sasaki Associates

Cate Oranchak

On Sunday, May 18th at 3:00 PM the Marblehead Arts Association (MAA) through its Programs and Education Committee will host landscape architect and artist Cate Oranchak, MLA, for a single lecture “Sticks and Stones, The Sculptural Landscape.” A reception will follow. Ms. Oranchak will share with the audience beautiful images from her extensive work in landscape design from residential-scale gardens to large-scale urban, waterfront and civic projects. This award-winning professional will define ways to manipulate the landscape as both sculpture and art to create meaningful and useful outdoor spaces. Drawing from examples of work both large and small, this program will be inspirational to the weekend gardener and the seasoned professional.

Focusing on the elements of landscape design, Oranchak will discuss and provide examples of innovative ways to combine earth, water and plant material to create desired effects. Demonstrating ways sticks and stones can transform the landscape; she will also show how color form and texture in plant material are powerful tools for creating impactful design.

Oranchak, a graduate of Harvard University School of Design, is a registered Landscape Architect and Senior Associate at Sasaki Associates, a world renowned interdisciplinary design firm. Working with the firm’s architects, planners, engineers and interior designers, she has had a leading role on many important projects in the United States and abroad during her ten-year tenure with the firm.

Oranchak has worked on numerous waterfront projects, such as the Cincinnati Central Riverfront Park; Robert Moses State Park, Massena, NY; US Embassy, Seoul, Korea; and the Queen’s Landing: Halifax, Nova Scotia. She has also participated in projects at such renowned institutions as the Interlochen Center for the Arts, University of Chicago and Loyola College.

Cate Oranchak has been a guest critic and a visiting faculty member of various institutions including; the Rhode Island School of Design, the Landscape Institute at the Arnold Arboretum, Boston Architectural Center and the Radcliffe Seminars. She has also published articles for the GSD News, Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

The lecture on May 18th at 3:00 PM will be held in the Ballroom Gallery of the Hooper Mansion at 8 Hooper Street, Marblehead. “It is fascinating to see how a landscape architect uses the earth, sky and plant material to create a personal vision and how this inspires all of us to create our own garden spaces.” states Nicholas Delegianis, Chair of the Programs and Education Committee for the MAA. Reservations for this event can be made by calling 781-631-2608. Members $7, non-Members $10. See our events page for listings of current and future events.

MAA Group Exploring Gallery Sales Initiatives

Some members of the MAA Board, as well as several artists interested in marketing, are meeting to identify ways and means to increase sales of artists’ works from Exhibitions. The first meeting yielded ideas on increasing traffic and visibility as well as increasing marketing and sales expertise.

As an artist member, if you would like to add to this discussion, or would be willing to take on even a small part of the final plan, please email Ted Baker at FoxPond(a)comcast.net or Susan Burgess at Susankb(a)earthlink.net. In the meantime, we will keep you informed of some of the strategies as they unfold, most notably an increased use of the Internet.

Painting Workshop in Umbria, Italy

MAA and Olde Ipswich Tours are collaborating to get the word out about a terrific and reasonably priced painting workshop in June 2008. Although geared toward artists there will be many activities and areas of interest to those that do not paint or will be joining an artist on this trip. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the MAA.

Workshop Dates: June 8-17, 2008

Included in the workshop:

-Full time workshop leader and guide

-8-day painting workshop

-8 nights’ deluxe accommodations (see below)

-8 breakfasts, 7 dinners

-Daily Excursions, plus activities for non-painting guests

-Transportation in comfortable air-conditioned minibus

Price: $2,150 per person, double occupancy

Does not include airfare but Old Ipswich Tours can help with air arrangements

Workshop: Eight day Plein Air workshop will be led by Bill Cloutman, a Boston, and North Shore painter, a graduate of Vesper George School of Art with training from notables such as Don Stone and Robert Douglas Hunter. The workshop is aimed at people with at least some experience in oil painting. A detailed materials list will be sent to participants.

Accommodations: Our Villa was originally the summer residence of the noble Perugian Donnini Mancini family. A seventeenth century farm, it was converted in the 1800’s to the beautiful frescoed villa that stands today. Step inside and forget any worries of the 21st century. Enjoy the tranquility of your room or relax in the Gran Sala; admire the Italian garden or stroll through the park; swim in the pool or just lounge outside the limonaia enjoying an extra long breakfast. If you want to escape, the Villa is that special hideaway. The charm of this home is that much has remained intact since the time of the Count and Countessa. Step back in time and marvel at the graceful columns that greet you in the entrance as does the beautiful pietra serena staircase that entices you upstairs. Sink back into the inviting cushions in the Gran Sala and admire its incredible frescoes and Murano chandelier. The charm continues through to the bedrooms, each furnished in its own style.

Frescoes also decorate each room’s ceiling and antiques furnish your room, some still remaining from the period of the Count and Countessa. Whether you decide on a suite or a room, all have their own style and name, and of course their own bathroom, one of our concessions to the 21st century!

(I’ve seen the photos of the villa and this place is STUNNING! DG)
