This summer the Annual Member Exhibit at the Marblehead Arts Association features 146 pieces that are creative, imaginative and a diverse mix of media. The Artwork in the show includes oil painting, drawing, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, glass work, sculpture, and photography. The exhibit is on display throughout the first and second floor galleries. Two judges were invited to select work in the categories of fine art and photography to be judged for prizes. The Annual Member exhibit has been a longstanding tradition for the Marblehead community. Every summer this exhibit has been a great way to show local artwork to tourists visiting Marblehead as well as regular local visitors to the Marblehead Arts Association.Cynthia Switzer Roth judged the fine arts category. Roth has a BA in art history, is a founding member of Local Colors of Gloucester, and has a background in design. When judging the show she looked for “technical ability…then looked for work that offered something beyond a visual experience…to be provoked and feel a certain degree of intimacy with the maker.” Roth granted the Judges Award to #4 “My Rock and My Fortress”, an acrylic painting, by Amy Roberts. Hart found that the piece had “a variety of strokes that make the whole come alive…I can almost smell the rich soil; I am transported.” Roth also gave Honorable Mention to #115 “Look after your Inner Spring”, an acrylic and ink painting, by Susan j Schrader, #19 “Come Find Me”, a mix media piece, by Erin Singleton, and “Million Dollar View”, a mixed media piece, by Patty De Grandpre.
Margaret Hart judged the photography category. Hart has a BFA from the University of Iowa and an MFA from University of Colorado, Boulder. Hart is also an Associate Professor at University of Massachusetts Boston where she teaches photography. Her work can be found in collections in the United States and abroad. Hart expresses her philosophy as follows, “the Art of photography is about seeing the world with a unique perspective and capturing something unexpected.” Hart gave the Judges award to #77 “Schooners” by John Weidenbruch because the photo “puts us on the ocean with these boats and captures the calm of these beautiful vessels”. Hart also gave Honorable Mention to #127 “Pinnacle” by Larry Dunn, #108 “Jantar Mahar Observatory” by Jonathan Willmer, and #21 “Oak Bluff Harbor” by Beth Guidry Hoffman.
